What is scar tissue therapy
Scar therapy is a method of non invasive physical therapy. It’s been developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis and adhesions after surgery or injury using specialist scar massage and fascial release therapy tools.
How can scar therapy help?
There are many benefits to seeing a therapist trained in scar therapy. If you have recently had a surgery or an injury, your therapist can treat your scar to help stimulate healing and soften fibrosis as the scar matures and suggests self care for you to continue at home.
Scar therapy can even be beneficial for older scars too. The body is constantly renewing cells so your old scars can still improve when given the right stimulation.
Our treatment using scar massage will always stay within your comfort levels. We do not need to hurt you to generate improvements to your scar and any underlying adhesions or fibrosis.
Can scar therapy break down scar tissue? Yes. the body does not know how to arrange collagen cells after surgery or injury, causing them to clump together and lose their natural structure. Scar therapy breaks them down and helps align the collagen fibers.
We can’t make a scar disappear, but scar therapy treatment usually generates improvements to symptoms such as pain or sensitivity. Textural changes to the suppleness of the scar and surrounding tissue often occur. How many treatments you may require will be dependent on the scar issues and symptoms you are experiencing.

Release Tightness
Scar therapy can help loosen
and release tight scar tissue to reduce discomfort. Treatment can be beneficial on both newand old scar tissue.

Support Emotional Wellbeing
Gentle therapeutic touch can be powerful way to aid emotional recovery and help accept changes after a surgery or accident.

Help Restricted Mobility
By reducing tightness and encouraging mobility betweenthe layers of skin, fascia and muscle, the client's range of movement can often improve.

Stimulate and Boost Healing
Scar massage is often recommended by surgeons to promote optimum scar healing after surgery & may minimise
long term complications.

Reduce Sensitivity and Pain
Trapped nerves and irritated
scar tissue can be a factor for prolonged discomfort. Therapeutic touch may reduce pain and help normalise sensitivity.

Holistic Scar Healing
A tailored programme focusing
on diet, exercise and manual treatments, can help optimize your scar healing and general wellbeing.
What we offer
As Physiotherapists we help restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. Through this we can also help to reduce your risk of injury or illness in the future, by taking a holistic approach that involves the patient directly in their own care.
At Agility we offer a unique blend of scar tissue work combined with the medical efficacy of physiotherapy techniques, which aims to promote /transform any underlying uncomfortable tightness, pain or restrictive movement of scar tissue towards a healthy recovery.
What you should expect
In most appointments, a combination of scar massage and physio movement/ exercise based techniques are used to provide the best results.
Scar massage is considered an effective way to decrease scar tissue build up and help make scars less noticeable. Pain and discomfort are not always felt at the source of the problem. scar massage is a holistic approach combining understanding of any discomfort or pain, with assessing movement and mobility across the body as well as directly around the scar. Scar massage is often considered to be most effective on immature scar tissue (less than two years old) but may still help with older scars.
To gain full mobility we may provide a light exercise program tailored to your specific needs which we will encourage and support as part of your self-care advice. We may recommend that you avoid strenuous activity for 24-48 hours after treatment. As if you engage in demanding physical activities after scar stimulation, your body may divert healing attention away from the scar. However, being totally inactive after treatment may lead to stiffness. So gentle exercise, stretching and following our prescribed program will help.
Following your consultation and assessment your treatment will be personalised to focus on areas of tightness and tension around your scar and the underlying fascia, muscles and any fibrotic tissue.
Will my scar look different?
Not all scars will have big visual changes. The improvement in your scar after one or two treatments may well be more subtle, as every body and every scar is unique, and results differ from individual to individual.
Many individuals undergo large and invasive surgery, with poor aesthetic results. It also benefits clients who have had much smaller injuries, such as keyhole surgeries or cosmetic procedures. Treatment is very beneficial for smaller scars and also to promote the best aesthetic and functional outcome in a preventative way. Therefore, you don’t need to wait until the scar has obvious issues to benefit from treatment.
In a perfect world, everyone would see a scar therapist after an injury or surgery – that’s why consultants and specialists recommend scar massage as standard advice for scar healing – because it’s known to be helpful.
My scar looks fine, but I have other issues.
Can scar tissue therapy really help?
Even when the scar looks fine some clients often seek help because of problems that are not resolving. This includes pain, sensory issues such as numbness, hypersensitivity, limited or poor range of movement. As Physiotherapists trained in scar tissue therapeutic techniques, we are trained at working with the body to improve functional issues after a surgery or injury leaves scar tissue, fibrosis and damage.
What to expect after your
scar therapy treatment.
Some may immediately notice changes in your scar in the following days after treatment. Others may require a few treatments before significant changes are observed it can very much depend on medical prognosis.
As nerves repair in the days or weeks after treatment, some people experience a sharp pain sensation which lasts only for a moment then disappears. If this happens, it is normal and should not be a cause for concern.
You may also feel tired or emotional after scar therapy. Listen to your body and rest as needed. A gentle and compassionate touch on your scar may generate emotional release. Although you should ask for help if you are struggling with your mental health.
We may suggest self-scar massage and can offer advise on products to hydrate your scar. These are very helpful to improve the cosmetic and functional results as part of a scar therapy treatment program.
